Jeep Safari – Bulgarian Style
First day in Bulgaria, a jeep safari you ask? Yes, please! Adrienne and I hopped into a gutted-out jeep with five others and had a bumpy ride with Galow (no idea how to spell/say his name, so this is a guess). He was young and enjoyed taking us off-OFF-roading (as I will call his crazy driving:).

Galow, our driver

A caravan of about 20 jeeps took us out of Varna and into the hills. We stopped for some very unique (and unpleasant) tasting Bulgarian brandy, off-off-roaded it to honey tasting, air-gun-shooting and sunflower field viewing.

HUGE sunflowers!

We did many doughnuts in the mud and drove sideways alongside hills. We saw animals on our safari as well! Cows, goats, and stray dogs. The whole time we tried figuring out, "What is going on?!" Ah, Adventure.
Sideways jeeps

AHHH!
What is goin on?

Finally we made it to the “barbeque”. The place looked like it came out of an old scary movie (see Adrienne’s face below).
Entrance to the BBQ

Before lunch with a couple of very nice undergrads from our jeep (the one on the right goes to UW-Green Bay).

Adrienne thinking where are we?!

The food was interesting as well. First, let me tell you what we were told NOT to eat while in Bulgaria…
Avoid: Tap water, uncooked fruits and vegetables (could’ve been washed in tap water), uncooked meat…
Barbeque menu:
Salad - full tomato, half a cucumber, shredded cabbage
"Salad"
Main course – a full pepper, solid baked potato, two chicken skewers that were red inside.

Drinks: Lots of beer, wine, and brandy (apparently to make Adrienne and I worry less, the Bulgarian told us).

Then there was singing and dancing and a beautiful ride back to the ship. Good day. Good day.
Every song ended in "Jeeep Saffariiii!"

A Natural (FREE) Spa - Bulgarian Mud Baths
The mud baths were interesting and fun. We first sat in a really smelly mud pool with salts and exfoliated. Then we went to the mud part and covered our whole body in mud (even our faces). Now, don't picture a spa or anything nice. This place looked kind of like a rice paddy farm, with sections of the mud squared off. Two-by-fours are the bridge to get to the pools of mud. Then you walk across the street to the black sand beach, let the mud harden on your body, then wash it off in the sea. It was a blast and our skin felt silky smooth.

Orphanage Visit
People have really like Bulgaria because we've actually participated in meaningful trips like visiting Gypsy communities (actually referred to as Roma communities), hospitals, small villages and orphanages. I went with Amy on the bus visiting children ages 0-3. It melted our hearts to see the little babies. The orphanage was clean and gigantic. They could house around 240 children but only 170 were there. The government is shutting down these orphanages (0-3 yr old children) for many reasons. One difficulty the government is having is mothers bringing their children to the orphanage, while continuing to hold custody of the children. So, they come maybe every month or so, see their child, sign a paper they were there, and receive monetary assistance from the government because they are “raising” their children. The staff that work with the children are wonderful and the kids are so well behaved. They all wanted to be held and loved.

Bye Bye!

Greek GRADesses
That is what we renamed ourselves while at the Acropolis. It was HOT, HOT, HOT but amazing to see. I was in heaven surrounded by so many unique pillars and columns (Mom, Brian, Heidi, Care, and Royce will understand).

Jenni, Me and Adrienne being pillars.
Adrienne, Me, and others who look tiny behind ;)

Ashley, Adrienne, Amy, Kristina, Me and Jenni at the Parthenon.

We also saw the changing of the guards at Parliament and Jenni decided to feed the birds…
Me and the Guard.

This makes me giggle. Jenni feeding the birds as they attack.

After building our appetites for a few hours we bought the most amazing gyros! Greek food is unbelievable! I did not expect to enjoy the food as much as I did but Greek food is definitely on the top of my list! Watch out Shish (St. Paul), here I come!
Amy feeding me dessert.

YUM!

Yum Yum!
Avada Kadavra! It All Ends Here. HP7P2-In 3D
You bet I saw HP while on SAS! Me, Jenni and Ashley were super excited to find a theatre that played it. It was very similar to the theatres in the U.S. We chatted with a few Greeks and enjoyed our own HP photo shoot. Take a look!

Greek Island? Yes Please!
Aegina, a smaller island close to Athens was our island of choice. All we were looking for was a sandy beach with cheap hotels. We found it! We had a long day on the beach, eating scrumptious calamari, Greek salad and drinking wine. We met a guy from New Jersey and ended up going out with him that night. After finding a cheap hotel, we got ready and had a fabulous time at a local bar, dancing the night away. I think we were “those Americans” because everyone kept their distance, but we didn’t mind. We had a blast! We didn’t get home until 4 am, with the help of our friend, and were a bit too loud and got scolded by the owner. Opps. The next day we were so exhausted we took an early ferry home and slept on the ship all day. It was Fabulous!!!
On the ferry over to the island we saw two dolphins jumping and playing right next to our boat.

Beautiful sand and water!

Serving ice cream with no shirt...Health standards...? Opa!

Eating lunch at the waters edge. Unbelievable.

This was on our hotel room door. 1 Star. It will do.
Fight For Your Rights
AS many may know, Greece is goug through turmoil. We experienced it in small ways through transportation strikes. The first day we were unable  to use the metro and had to pay high prices for taxis. The second day the taxis were on strike and blocked all the streets so buses were unable to pass. Cab drivers were removing their license plates and congregating in the streets. They are upset because the government is taking over the industry and they all lose out on a lot of money. Greece is in going through a lot right now and we saw just a piece of it.
Removing his plate.

No one is moving in the streets with taxis parked everywhere.

Dubrovnik, Croatia. Where do I start?!
This place is a hidden gem! It's exactly what you'd think of, let's say, Italy, but cleaner, prettier water, and less crowded! From the minute I stepped off the ship I saw houses on the side of the hill, the people are wonderful, the ocean is turquoise blue and you can see to the bottom, there are beautiful cliffs, etc. I’m finally feeling better (sick in Italy) and am ready to explore!
Unbelievable views from within the city walls

College Visit-American College of Management and Technology
ACMT is a sister school of Rochester School of Technology in Rochester, NY. Ana, who is in charge of admissions, marketing, and about four other things, gave us a presentation on how the school runs, similarities, differences, etc. It is a very small college of about 500, and only 14 staff members! Graduating students get an American and Croatian degree. It’s pretty neat! Anyone reading this still in undergrad should really think about studying abroad here!
